Rich Task

Scenario:

A developer has proposed to build a large block of units or shopping centre on an unused carpark. A number of community groups believe this will not benefit them and at that there are much fairer ways to use the land.

Task:

Taking the perspective of a selected community group, students propose an alternative development proposal for the use of the land. They must then transform this into a multimodal PowerPoint presentation incorporating linguistic (written and spoken), visual (images, labels, embedded information), and audio (music and SFX) modes in a semiotic manner that will be used to persuade the local community to adopt their proposal. The final product will be converted to video and posted on the schools website to showcase what the students have been doing.
An assessment criteria (Development Proposal Criteria) will be given to students to to make clearer what is required of them.

Lessons 1-5

Develop students written, visual and multimodal literacy with a focus on exposition or persuasive text types and architectural/commercial design as well as developing their written proposal drafts.

Lessons 6-10 Focus on the multimodal development of this task
